The Serious Side of Care








Working with the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, I learned a troubling statistic: 1 in 4 Canadians spend an average of 19 hours a week caring for a loved one. Even worse, because the labour, exhaustion, and emotional toll often happen behind closed doors, the realities of caregiving remain largely unseen. It means that caregiving is often overlooked and undervalued by most Canadians; it means that&#38;nbsp;no one realizes how serious care is until they have to do it themselves.&#38;nbsp;

For radio, we partnered with stand-up comedian Gerry Dee to challenge the audience’s perceptions of caregiving in a way that remained true to Gerry’s lived experiences.







For out-of-home, we created lenticular installations and placed them in high-traffic areas throughout Toronto and Alberta. As viewers moved past the posters, the images shifted to reveal the side of caregiving most people rarely get to see.
 



In print, we brought to life three distinct caregiving stories that started as typical Saturday morning comic strips before morphing into serious depictions of care in vivid detail. Finger Fitness
The only downside of Edo Japan offering three amazing meals for under 10 dollars? Your fingers need to be in tip-top chopstick-holdin’ shape if you want to take full advantage of the deal.

So what did we do? We partnered with finger-breakdancing digital sensation @fingerbreak (1.4 million YouTube subscribers) to teach people the best way to get their fingers juiced up. Thanks to us, thousands of Canadians had the chance to work out their cravings and eat their personal best. 
My only regret? We cut the frozen sukiyaki beef punching scene during the Rocky video. I know, I know.&#38;nbsp;






Slurp-WorthyWhen Edo Japan changed up their ramen soup recipe, we tapped into a fun insight: in Japan, slurping is polite. It’s a way of showing you love the soup. 
So we had some fun with that.&#38;nbsp;

















The Crave of Your Dreams
Dreams are the most powerful cravings we can have, I once read that on the back of a bento box. Well, what better way to bring our insane, wacky, over-the-top food dreams to life than with the magic of glitchy, weird AI? Our paid socials included poke bowl islands, rivers of sushi, noodle rivers, and more. Then for World Sleep Day we created a teriyaki-scented dream-inducing pillow mist spray (say that 10 times fast) so we could further help people dream about our delicious food.&#38;nbsp; Because you know who wants their pillow to smell like mouthwatering teriyaki? Everyone, that’s who.

















They’re DynamiteWhen Edo wanted to introduce new Dynamite Poke Bowls, we decided to lean into the bowls being an explosion of flavour in your mouth. We used classic onomotopeia style explosions and made ads that actually blow up (they would literally look like your screen was cracked after they exploded).&#38;nbsp;

18 Year Old Teriyaki Sauce


For April Fools, we gave Edo customers something they never knew they absolutely needed: An aged 18-year-old Teriyaki sauce. Because sipping Whisky is okay, I guess. But sippin’ teriyaki? Distilled in rare Mizunara Oak barrels? I think we all can safely agree 

Lagavulin is in serious trouble.






Relation SticksFor Valentines Day, we offered Edo customers the chance to go in store and test their love with ‘Relation Sticks’. We challenged couples to share a pair of chopsticks and evaluate the strength of their relationship by how well they worked together.
Some people said that these were basically just normal chopsticks. But no, these are relation sticks, they’re totally different, an entirely new thing, legally distinct.

If you watched Super LVII and were on the west coast, Hawaii or New York, you probably saw this spot for JuneShine. Some might say that writing a regional Super Bowl ad isn’t as cool as writing a national Super Bowl ad, but nobody asked you, Oklahoma. 

The first of three spots, ‘Trees’ highlighted that JuneShine would devote 1% of sales during February and March to the National Forest Foundation, which I think isn’t too shabby. It got almost 3 million views on youtube, got featured in adweek, and sales went way, way up.
 
Not too shabby at all.

Subway Training CampMost people know Scottie Barnes the Basketball player, but how many people know Scottie the Sandwich artist?  We teamed up with Subway, Scottie and a host of influencers to create Subway Training Camp, turning Scottie from Raptors superstar to coach/host of his own sandwich reality show, breaking down step by step what it takes to make the perfect sub.

Subs are Finally All-Dressed




We introduced Subway’s All-Dressed Sauce by implying that until now, your subs have never been fully dressed. You may have thought they were, but it’s only NOW with all-dressed sauce that your subs could finally be considered decent. We also tapped into the love affair between the two brands and sprinkled in a bit of Canadiana. All in all, people loved the content, but they loved the sauce even more. 
That’s a win-win.

BreadiblesFor April Fools ‘ Day, we blew up the internet by introducing the world to cannabis edibles that tasted like our signature bread. Infused with BRD, people were legit bummed these things didn’t exist for real and weren’t actually dropping on 4/20.&#38;nbsp;These were super fun to bring to life, and our talented producer baked and carved them herself using a gelatin mold. I didn’t actually try one, but they looked great!&#38;nbsp;

These puppies got 3 million impressions, 144k engagements, 80k shares, and netted 1.3k new followers.

The Child Hunger LunchboxCanadian parents have no idea what food insecurity looks like around the globe. What they do know is what it’s like to pack their kids lunch every day for school. So we partnered with Save the Children to create the Child Hunger Lunchbox, a child’s lunchbox filled with the reality of what starving children deal with around the globe. It had bitter leaves, contaminated water, and various items designed to shock parents into having a stark realization of what children around the globe actually deal with.

We then sent the lunchbox to lifestyle influencers around Canada to do an ‘unboxing’. The Campaign won a bunch of rewards, but more importantly, it got real results, directly leading to increased donations for Save the Children Canada.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 




  
  

 




We also hijacked pinterest, sneaking in our lunchbox in posts where parents would be looking for school lunchtime ideas for their own children.&#38;nbsp;

GIF Baskets

Last Christmas, everyone was broke. Inflation was at 7% and rent was out of control. In a time when people were being forced to choose between gifts and groceries, we responded by making&#38;nbsp;GIFbaskets.ca, letting people send GIF baskets to their loved ones instead of wasting their precious holiday money on actual gifts. 
We got thousands of hits, got into Strategy’s holiday round-up and were even featured in The Hustle. While we didn’t really make anyone’s holiday wishes come true, we did save them some money, and isn’t that what the holidays are really all about? 
Thanks to us, it was finally better to GIF than to receive.&#38;nbsp;

We Know Your World


We developed HSBC’s business banking platform,&#38;nbsp;We Know Your World. Our campaign was built around the insight that every industry had its own sounds and words, its own secret language to anyone not ‘in the know’. Our ads used visuals and terms that only people in that industry would understand. Because if you’re a 5 to 15 million dollar company, switching business banks is a big deal, and that means going to someone you trust, someone that speaks your language&#38;nbsp;and understands your industry in a way no one else does.&#38;nbsp;











Our banner ads used language like ‘ad volerum’, ‘kaizen’ and other terms specific to the industries our ads were targetting.

We also pitched OOH and socials that were changed significantly, but I think the original concepts are still worth sharing.

Our outdoor billboards would be strategically placed near certain business sectors, using industry lingo unique to the audience who saw them.
On the social side of things, we wanted HSBC followers to speak what I coined as ‘Jobberish’, or industry specific language that sounds like gibberish to anyone not in your field.
